Pokemon Fire Red Nidoran Location: Where to Catch Both Forms

10 September 2026 | 8

Tracking down both gender forms of Nidoran in Pokemon FireRed provides players with powerful poison-type options early in their adventure. While both Nidoran male and female evolve into versatile threats, finding them in the wild depends heavily on version rates and specific locations. Understanding where to search saves trainers valuable time as they navigate through the Kanto region.

Finding Nidoran on Route 3

The earliest location to encounter both Nidoran forms in Pokemon FireRed is on Route 3, located just east of Pewter City. You will unlock access to this area immediately after defeating Brock at the Pewter City Gym. Search the tall grass areas just before Mt. Moon to start encountering wild Pokemon.

In Pokemon FireRed, Nidoran male appears with a high encounter rate of around 14% in this grass. However, Nidoran female is exceptionally rare on Route 3 in FireRed, spawning with only a 1% encounter rate. Trainers seeking the female form may need to spend extra time searching or consider alternative acquisition methods.

Underground Path In-Game Trade

To avoid grinding for the rare 1% spawn on Route 3, players can utilize a handy in-game trade. Located in the Underground Path building on Route 5 south of Cerulean City, an NPC offers a direct trade. She will trade her rare Nidoran form in exchange for the common version found in your game.

By catching an extra Nidoran male on Route 3, you can easily swap it for a Nidoran female without relying on luck. This shortcut ensures you acquire both forms long before reaching mid-game areas. It is one of the most efficient ways to complete early Dex entries in FireRed.

Catching Nidoran in the Safari Zone

Another reliable area to encounter both forms is the Safari Zone located in Fuchsia City. As you explore the various areas of the park, both Nidoran male and Nidoran female appear in the wild. You can also encounter their middle evolutions, Nidorino and Nidorina, roaming the same tall grass patches.

While catching Pokemon in the Safari Zone depends on bait and rock mechanics, encounter rates here are balanced. Traversing Areas 1 through 4 gives you multiple opportunities to catch missing forms. This area is ideal for players who missed catching them early in their journey.

Evolving Both Forms into Final Stage Teams

Both Nidoran forms follow similar evolutionary paths that reward early investment. Each Pokemon evolves naturally into its second stage at level 16 through normal battle experience. To reach their final forms, Nidoking and Nidoqueen, you must expose them to a Moon Stone.

Multiple Moon Stones are available throughout Kanto, with two hidden inside nearby Mt. Moon. Evolving your Nidorino or Nidorina early grants immense stat boosts and massive movepool coverage. Both Nidoking and Nidoqueen remain top-tier choices for defeating Gym Leaders and the Elite Four.
